Horse Gram Idli is a very traditional recipe that has been handed down over generations. Our ancestors were really healthy people and had enough energy, immunity and stamina, thanks to all the healthy food that the used to eat. Horse Gram Idli is one such dish that is packed with the right amount of proteins and carbs and since it has very less fat content, you can indulge in this dish for a healthy kick-start to your busy day. Not to forget, the Horse Gram used is not only a source of protein and energy, it also facilitates smooth working of organs such as the kidney, and keeps kidney stones at bay.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Kasturi Horse Gram 1 pav
  • Kasturi Urad Dal 1 pav
  • Kasturi Idli Rava 2 pav
  • Salt to Taste

METHOD OF PREPARATION:

  • Soak Horse Gram and Black Gram Dal together in water for about 2 hours.
  • Wash the Dal and grind it to a fine paste and transfer it to a vessel.
  • Soak the Idli Rava in water, strain it and then add it to the ground paste.
  • Add salt to taste and as much water as required to bring it to an idli batter consistency. Fermentation for this batter is not necessary.
  • Grease a container with oil and pour the batter into the  container by filling upto 3/4th of it.
  • Steam it for half an hour.

Take it out, cut it into desired pieces and serve with a nice spicy chutney.

OTHER PREPARATIONS:

The Horse Gram Idlis can be prepared in Woven Jack Fruit Leaf containers. The Jack Fruit leaves impart a lingering aroma and flavor to these Idlis and enhance its taste.

The Horse Gram Idli batter can also be used to make dosas or pancakes and also another variation in a smaller pan/kadhai. For every cup of the batter, season with a spoon of coconut oil and mustard and then pour a spoon of the batter into he pan. This version is famous as the Horse Gram Doddak or Kulta Doddak.
