MEAL PREP AND VACCINATIONS

We’ve often heard people say that the most difficult thing to decide and most difficult question to answer is “What’s for breakfast tomorrow?”

A lot of planning does go into preparing meals right from sourcing the groceries and veggies, organizing and storing them, prioritizing their usage and making a well balanced meal out of what is available in times like these lockdowns. It is also a huge challenge to prep good meals during this phase of vaccinations.

VACCINATION IS NECESSARY:

It is extremely necessary to get yourself vaccinated and also very essential to spread the word and create an awareness about vaccines. Like they always say that the health of the family depends on the kitchen of the house, it is very essential that for a person who takes care of the house, takes responsibility of cooking for the family should be aware of heading out on priority to get the first shot when your turn comes. heading out for Vegetables, Groceries, etc. should be done by following the Covid Protocols of social distancing and while heading out to procure materials, we need to be proactive and get our vaccines to keep the the children at home safe. Stay safe everyone.

COOKING CHALLENGE DURING VACCINATIONS:

After a vaccination people have different experiences of a sore arm, a headache, a fever, a body pain as the body prepares a good amount of antibodies and develops resistance power to the disease. So at such times, it is advised that you take it easy, keep calm, take a good amount of rest and also eat healthy.

The best way to cope with soreness post vaccination is to be proactive and have enough stocked up for a day or two so that you can just make something quick and eat.

TIPS TO BE EQUIPPED DURING VACCINATIONS:

Apart from preparing ourselves with required medicines to bring down the fevers, it is also important to make sure that we have a good amount of nutritious food available that is quick to make.

A few tips to help around the kitchen would be to do your homework well the day before your vaccine:

  1. Planning out the menu a day or two in advance and keeping required veggies and groceries in stock
  2. Chopping and keeping vegetables ready for use
  3. Preparing a good batter and storing it in the refrigerator. You can quickly make a dosa or two if you have batter that is ready.
  4. Pressure cooking and freezing pulses which can just be tossed into a pan to make some quick Sundals
  5. Kneading some atta or roti dough before hand so that you can quickly roll out rotis or chapathis

DISHES THAT YOU CAN PREPARE:

  1. COMFORT YOURSELF WITH SOUPS:

A vegetable soup can easily be a wholesome nutritious meal to give you comfort and the hydration that you require when you feel under the weather. You can prepare some soups with any of the vegetables and freeze these for a couple of days. Take as much as you want and heat and consume. Spices like Kasturi Ajwain and Kasturi Jeera when used in vegetable soups and Dal Shorbas help keep warm!!

We have a Wellness Soup Recipe on our blog if you wish to check it out.

2. WHOLESOME NUTRITION IN ONE POT MEALS:

The “One-Pot-Meal” is an interesting concept where you have all the nutrition that you require in a single dish which you make at one go. This is mainly our Indian Staples like the Dal-Khichdi, Bisi-Bele-Bath, Puliogare, Sambar Sadam, Vangi Bath, Takkali-Rice (Tomato Rice), Pongal, Mosaranna (Curd Rice)

You can make a quick simple Vegetable Khichdi by tossing in a cooker a combination of Dals like Kasturi Toor Dal, Kasturi Chana Dal, Kasturi Urad Dal, Kasturi Moong Dal and Masoor Dal, an equal amount of Rice and a combination of vegetables. Add water that is about twice the quantity of the solid stuff that you are cooking and cook for about 3 whistles. There you have something tasty and nutritious!!

3. TRY THE HUMBLE DOSAS OR IDLIS:

Once prepared, batter can be stored in the refrigerator and used on a daily basis for upto 5 days. You can make a variety of Dosas, Idlis, Panniyarams with just a single batter.

To make this all-purpose batter, soak Kasturi Urad Dal for about an hour and grind it into a smooth paste. Ferment this for about 6 hours. You can the add Kasturi Idli Rava to the ground paste and get the desired consistency by adding water as required.

Ratio of Kasturi Urad Dal : Kasturi Idli Rava :: 1:3

4. STICK TO SOME RICE AND PULSES:

Sticking to simple basics is easy too. You can just soak any Kasturi pulse overnight, steam it for about 6 whistles. Separate the pulse from the broth and season both separately to have a Pallya and a Rasam to go with plain rice. Pulses can be steamed and stored and frozen along with the broth for a couple of days. Preparing a quick meal will take about 10 minutes if you have the preparation done before hand.

5. TEA CAKES:

Baking Tea Cakes on the morning that you head out for a vaccine gives you a good Tea-time snack for 3 days!! Whole Wheat cakes from Kasturi Special Atta are simple to whip up and make in a jiffy!!

Here are few cake recipes that we have on our blog which you may wish to try:
