Kulithu Koddel or Kulta Kaat is a healthy and tangy Konkani dish which can be explained as:
“HORSE GRAM AND STEAMED BANANA SHOOT IN A SPICY COCONUT STEW“.
You can make a Kulithu Koddel by using a variety of veggies like potato(Kook), Raw Banana(Kele), Field Marrow(Magge) and Banana Shoot(Gabbo) to go with the nutritious Horse Gram seed. The Horse Gram seeds being a source of rich nutrition and heat requires a vegetable as such to go with it to balance out the dish by producing the right amount of water and fiber to aid in digestion. A spicy coconut gravy, seasoned with red chillies and Garlic adds to that much needed zing in the flavor.

INGREDIENTS:
- Kasturi Horse gram 1/4 th cup
- Kasturi Red chilly 6 nos(roasted )
- Tamarind
- Banana shoot rinds 20 pieces
- Grated Coconut 1 cup
- Garlic 15 nos
PREPARATION:
- Soak the Horse Gram seeds in water overnight and then pressure cook them for about 5 whistles.
- Cut and cook the Banana Shoot pieces in the pressure cooker for about 2 whistles.
- Make a fine coconut paste by adding grated coconut, chilly and tamarind.
- Add the fine coconut paste with cooked horse gram and the Banana shoot.
- Adjust the gravy to required consistency by adding water and then boil well.
- In another small pan, heat some coconut oil, toss in some crushed Garlic and let them turn golden brown. Add some red chillies to this and toss it around for a couple of seconds.
- Season the stew with the fried garlic and Red chillies and cover immediately.
- Serve with boiled rice.
HEALTH BENEFITS:

Due to the diuretic properties of Horse Gram which help to dissolve Kidney stones and eliminate those through urine, it is considered to be a very good herbal remedy for the same. Horse Gram intake also helps to regulate blood glucose levels, the protein content helps to keep the body warm during winter and the seed also promotes sperm production and treats infertility.
The Banana Shoot or Banana Stem also has Diuretic properties and helps keep Kidney Stones at bay. The Banana Shoot(even other mentioned veggies) are very rich in fiber content and assist in maintaining food intake and body weight.
Kultha Koddel is a traditional Mangalorean curry. This curry when served with boiled rice is a wholesome and well balanced meal.
